Pop quiz, gear head: Do you know what down is? Did you guess feathers? Wrong. Down is simply the layer of fluff that resides just below a waterfowl’s plumage. Because it’s fluffy, it keeps you warm by trapping heat within clusters of air, which as you (should) know is one of the best insulators.
As an insulating layer, there’s little better than a down jacket or vest. The Obermeyer KFO Down Insulator is a trimmer-fitting (but not “fashion” trim) insulation layer perfect for skiers and snowboarders alike. It utilizes 600-fill power down, mesh stow pockets, tricot-lined hand pockets, full-motion sleeve construction, ski pass ring, integrated stuff sack (stuffs very small), heavy duty zippers, and an especially nice touch: a fleece chin protector for those bombing runs.
The Obermeyer KFO Down Insulator’s outer layer is made of nearly 50% recycled material spun into a polyester twill that’s soft to the touch yet water resistant and highly compressible. And even after our twelve dozen test stuffings, it still managed to hold it’s shape and wrinkle free.
