Sony is entering the ruggedized camera game with the DSC-TX5 (est. $300), an ultracompact camera capable of handling anything from tame family vacations to full-on nightlifers. Waterproof down to 10 feet (for 60 mins), shockproof from drops of 5 feet, and capable of operating in temperatures as low as 14 degrees F, the DSC-TX5 is pretty much designed for what we imagine a semi-hard night out. Essentially it’s small enough to slide in your pocket, capable of withstanding spilled drinks or beer pint d(r)unks, and being knocked off the bar.
All the features from the Sony DSC-TX1 are in the TX5 including Sweep Panorama (it works far better than you’d expect), 720p video capture, 10 megapixel low-light optimized sensor, SD(HC) and Memory Stick Pro Duo card slots, and a bright 3″ touch screen. This bad boy will be available this April for adventurers, clumsy people, and the girlfriend who’s incapable of keeping her camera without smashing it up at a club.
