SandBell

Rethinking Instability Dumbbells

By Patrick Tuttle on 5.12.10

Instability is the new “black” in the fitness world. We’ve seen it permeate every type of workout equipment, and now we’re adding dumbbells to the list. Why? Because we’ve had a chance to use SandBells. The SandBell ($8-$85) is a cross between a sandbag, a dumbbell, a barbell, a grip bag, a medicine ball, a slam ball, a stability pod, a gliding disk, and a kettlebell. Seriously.

We like them because you can mix up a stagnant routine and engage under-utilized muscles groups in the process. If you can’t find a weight that suits your needs, you simply adjust the sand (or other fill) volume to your desired. Each SandBell is constructed of thick neoprene so it’s both soft and stretchy (adding to the instability), but durable enough for a daily abusing. They’re even small enough to keep one at your desk, but challenging enough to use at home when you can’t make it to the gym.

Kettlebell • Grip strength challenge • Shifting sand challenges stabilizing muscles • Variable sand volume which duplicates the characteristics of kettlebell • Soft and safe version of a metal or plastic kettlebell • Snatch with explosive power at any weight • Swing SandBell vigorously without fear of injury  Advantages v. Slam-Ball, Medicine Ball and Grip Bags • Durable enough to slam repeatedly • Increase grip strength when tossed and received • Great deceleration training at any weight • No fear of jammed fingers • Won’t roll away when dropped  Special Features Beyond the amazing functionality and multiple applications, the SandBell boasts a patent pending fill mechanism (called a ’Ngazzle’ — pronounced nozzle) which allows the owner to fill or remove sand at their leisure.  Normally, sandbags, dumbbells, and similar equipment face steep shipping charges.  SandBells, however, can be shipped empty and filled on site with minimal effort — and Huge Savings! You can send a full set of Empty SandBells (which, when filled are a total of 222 lbs) for around $15. Then you can get your own sand for less than $25 at the local Home Improvement store and fill them yourself. We recommend that you purchase DRY play sand.  The best we have found is the 50lb bags of Quickcrete Premium Washed Play Sand, which is available at most major Home Improvement Stores.  Again, check the bag closely to make sure that it is DRY!
