Recently, Gear Patrol tried out a few pairs of Rockport Hydroplex Water Shoes ($90, top). Maintaining the traditional Rockport lace-up look combined with a Hydromotion drainage system that keeps the sole dry, the Hydroplex resides somewhere in between a sneaker and boat shoe. Even the full-grain leather and breathable mesh are waterproof. The sole features Adidas’ adiPRENE technology, DMX air chamber for comfort, and Strobel construction to aid in stability and flexibility. To add to its versatility, the Hydroplex Water Shoe is completely machine washable. Just don’t confuse it with a pair of cross-trainers. Though, they’ll serve in a pinch when you’re thwarting a gale off your starboard beam, or (in reality) running after the dog. Pairs well with chino shorts.
The Hydroplex comes in five colorways and is part of Rockport’s Hydromotion Collection (shown above) which includes, the Hydrotrip, (untested) which has a decidedly more “boat shoe” aesthetic.
