Recognized as the #1 shoe in golf, FootJoy has been a long-time industry leader in terms of performance and comfort. With the recent departure of the tremendously popular FootJoy Classic and the introduction of their new flagship model, the FootJoy ICON undoubtedly has some pretty big shoes to fill.
Heritage inspired, the FootJoy ICON combines contemporary styling, classic top-notch full grain leather and calfskin detailing, and an advanced lacing system. For those of you not familiar with Boa, the Boa Lacing System is designed to address deficiencies found with laces, buckles, ratchets, and Velcro by providing a reel and steel lace cable network that allows you to dial in a precise and consistent non-slip fit. It also adjusts down to 1mm with each click to ensure precise fit. Each lace is made from compressed strands of aircraft-grade stainless steel wires which; gram-by-gram are stronger than tank armor. Granted, if you happen to bust through the tank armor, the laces take mere minutes to replace.
When it comes to FootJoy, excellence in comfort and performance are expected. At least from me. Anything short of that would be a disappointment. From the first tee to the 18th green, the FootJoy ICON with Boa Lacing System lock your feet into a leather-covered fit bed with full leather linings that mold to your feet for a comfortable, breathable feel. Additionally, the memory foam around the tongue and collar adds additional cushioning while the microfiber heel counter for added slip-resistance. The Boa Lacing System is easily the best feature of this shoe. With a few quick turns of the dial, you’re ready to go or pop out the dial and your feet are free to slide out – especially handy when your socks get sandy while digging out of the sand trap. Fit remains consistent throughout the round, and adjusts in seconds if your feet start to swell.
Although the FootJoy ICON with Boa Lacing System is only available in two styles, we hope to see them offered in a wider range of designs including the classic saddles. Only time will tell if this new FootJoy will become an ICON like the FootJoy Classics but they’ve certainly taken a step in the right direction.
