Thanks to the efforts of The Commons, an immense world of photographs previously unseen or easily accessible (many in Kodachrome goodness) are making their way to the web on flickr. A great example, and personal favorite, are the 180 NASA photographs that recently joined the collection. A veritable treasure trove of vintage and nostalgic images, NASA is only one amongst many participants involved in the initiative including other noteworthy members like the Library of Congress, George Eastman House, Powerhouse Museum, U.S. National Archives, and The Getty with sets ranging from Photographs of World War 1, to Photochrom Travel Views, to Baseball Americana, to Woman in History a mere fraction of the archives. Besides the fact that you can easily spend hours of time browsing and feeling inspired, all the deliciously high-resolution photographs are available for download and use (note: the rights and usage are hazy, at best) immediately qualifying this as the best collection of free desktop wallpapers in a long, long time. Treat ‘em with care.
