Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro

Worth every dollar per MM

By Eric Yang on 11.5.10

A little friendly competition is always good. In the case of playground battle between Canon and Nikon, the shooters usually win, and Canon’s much-delayed response to Nikon’s fantastic 105mm f/2.8 macro lens, the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro ($900) has win written all over it. The 1:1 image uses a stabilization system that compensates for horizontal and vertical shake and pitch, or even forward and backward motion on Macro Servo equipped cameras like the Canon EOS 7D. Per the usual the “L” designation of this EF lens means you get weather proofing, rock-solid construction, ridiculously fast auto-focusing via USM, and ultra-low dispersion glass. Oh, and before you think “macro” is just for wildlife and fauna, think again – macro lenses are some of the best lenses to capture portraits… or in the case of Gear Patrol, products.
