Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Summit

Putting the Grand back

By Ethan Dougherty on 11.17.10

Boasting enough credentials, both on and off-road, the new Jeep Grand Cherokee has been racking up the points with us. Its new, awesome interior (when’s the last time you said that about a Jeep), exceptional chassis and rugged exterior looks hit all the right notes and in its latest iteration, the range topping 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Summit ($43,000), there’s even one for those that want exclusivity, too.

Outside you’ll find an exclusive Rugged Brown paint, 20″ polished-aluminum wheels and fully chromed grille that seem a touch loud, but manage to work in harmony with the new Jeep’s facade. On the inside, the award-winning interior inherits even more exclusivity with perforated saddle Nappa heated/ventilated leather seats, real black olive burl wood trim, heated steering wheel, and Berber floor mats with black and chestnut accents.

A 360 hp (390 lb-ft torque) 5.7-liter Hemi multi-displacement V8 get 13/19 mpg and is good for a 7,200 lb towing capacity. It’s also available with the Quadra Drive II 4WD system with electronic limited-slip rear differential, Selec-Terrain multi-terrain drive system with hill-start and hill-descent control, and the Quadra-Lift air suspension. All this is paired with a multitude of electronic systems including adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, and forward collision warning.

If it sounds more like you’re reading the description for a Range Rover than a Jeep, we’re pretty sure Jeep won’t mind. The Grand Cherokee may be made right here in the U.S. but remember, this is the Jeep Cherokee developed under the wings of DaimlerChrysler and there are plenty of queues that carry over from its German ex-cousins, like fully four-wheel independent suspension from the Mercedes ML. As for the new muscular design that looks so familiar – Jeep designers penned the latest Cherokee as an homage to the original iconic Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ. Our perspective? Perfect.
