Since 1995, Massachusetts-based Factory Five has been redefining the term “kit car” with their alarmingly handsome replicas for attainable prices. The Factory Five Mk4 Roadster can be built with one of two kits. The base kit ($12,990) requires a donor 1987-1993 Mustang or a complete kit ($19,995) that needs nothing more than a powertrain, wheel, tires and paint. It’s the best way to get yourself into the Cobra (homage) of your childhood without wrecking a 401k. Unlike most replicas, Factory Five’s kits boast modern engineering, race-proven materials, CAD-aided manufacturing methods and track-tested refinement honed over years of iteration. But, along with an achingly gorgeous design comes an equally significant commitment — no less than 200+ hours for the average layman. This isn’t for the faint of heart. Luckily, you’re not alone. New builders can tap into the rabidly loyal and enthusiastic community (more than 7,000 of the Mk4′s have been sold) online forums, meetups and even a 3-day “build school” class. Say hello to your winter project.
