A five-star hotel it may not be, but in our book Ten Broeck Cottage is even better. Nestled on 8 acres of apple orchard in Hudson, New York (two hours north of the city) the 3 bedroom cottage is a blend of historical and modern amenities. Exposed beams and 15″ wide plank flooring are juxtaposed by a home-wide multizone Sonos iPod sound system and speedy wireless. Wide views of fields and orchards (from which you may freely pick) and reclaimed wood antiques contrast nicely against a massive, ultra-modern kitchen. There’s even a sauna, steam room for recovery after your pick apples or take a plunge in the Taghkanik Creek that runs alongside the property. We can’t think of a better destination to hole up as a fortress of solitude, a romantic weekend sure to stun the wife, or, like this writer’s previous weekend, use as a perfect place to catch up with friends. The only downside? An inevitable letdown knowing that Ten Broeck isn’t actually your home.
