The BMW M5 has stood as the definitive sports sedan for two decades. Others have tried and though some have duplicated its power, no one has been able to harness the commensurate handling dynamics in this category. Now, BMW has pulled back the curtains on its 2012 BMW M5 Concept, and the results are nothing less than stunning. Far more beautiful than its older brother, the last gen M5, this version echoes the design elements from the standard 5-series only with a more muscular stance and the guts to back it up. “Concept” in BMWspeak translates to a nearly finished production design, not some pie-in-the-sky one-off that will never see the light of a dealership showroom. The details are as such: V8 twin-turbo churning out a mammoth 546 horsepower (46 ponies more than the last M5), seven-speed dual clutch transmission and four driving modes (Comfort = boulevard cruising; Sport = spirited jaunt on country roads; Sport-Plus = really late for your hot date at the other end of town; M Driving Mode = local track day event/scare the crap out of your friends). All we know is that this chop-licking monster should be at the top of your list of Truly Lustworthy Family Sedans. Just tell the kiddies to leave their Nintendo DSs at home because they’ll be occupied with holding on for dear life.
