In the grand scheme of DIY jobs, we’re pretty sure building an airplane is one of the most ambitious (and ballsy) projects you can take on. Starting with a kit from Velocity Aircraft, however, can help make the monumental task slightly more manageable. Their business model revolves around selling comprehensive “experimental aircraft” kits that can be built in most two-car garages without the need for Boeing-sized tool collection. Comprehensive manuals are obviously included, as are a detailed set of construction videos and a builders hotline for oh sh$# moments. Kits range from $65,000 to $125,000 at the top end — making them far more affordable than the pre-built alternatives. Velocity can also provide pre-packaged fuselages and wing components if you prefer to leave some of complex items up to professionals. Regardless of what route you take, the result is a modern plane capable of reaching 200+ mph cruise speeds that can comfortably fly up to four passengers and baggage on cross country trips at altitudes of 7,000 to 12,000 ft. We’d recommend keeping the fact that you built the plane to yourself though if you expect any sober person to hop on board.
