For most people, the term travel guide triggers visions of stout books, stuffed to the margins with 10 point font and the occasional over-saturated color photo. Boutique firm Herb Lester and Associates rebels against this stereotype by working with exceptional illustrators and designers to create beautiful guides to the world’s great cities. Each detailed edition takes the form of a fun and intelligent themed map that aims to teach travelers about “the well-used and much-loved” and “the extraordinary as well as the everyday.” As Herb Lester’s sees it, the inside perspective to a city’s true charm lies in “old bookshops and new coffee shops, park benches and dive bars, hat shops and haberdashers”. We couldn’t agree more.

All of their guides to date are available for purchase individually, but their clever gift packs really stand out as ideal presents for globe trotters who’ve received one too many travel alarm clock. They even offer a year long subscription service that sends each new guide as it’s printed via first class mail. Time to check your frequent flier miles again.

Editor’s Note: If travel isn’t on your horizon, these guides still make for outstanding wall art.
