Planning on making a pilgrimage to South by Southwest (SXSW) in the coming weeks? Then pack Herb and Lester’s latest edition to their excellent city guide series with you. Like all of their enhanced maps, Austin on the Hoof covers a wide array of attractions, many of which you won’t see mentioned in typical travel literature. In fact, both the illustrations and guide tips were contributed by Austin natives Curtis Jinkins and Aaron Blount — so expect random facts like Austin being home to the world’s largest urban bat colony, or an explanation behind the city’s unique 165-foot “moonlight” towers. There are plenty of eclectic highlights to visit as well, including the End of the Ear record shop, Fonda San Miguel for the best Mexican in the city, Alamo Draft house movie theaters, the first known photograph on display at the Harry Ransom Center and even noteworthy suggestions outside of the city limits including the “holy trinity” of BBQ in nearby Lockhart. Still need to know more? Then check out the photos after the break.
