Bicycle enthusiasts the world over are unanimous on the subject. Apart from a sturdy helmet, the best tool against road rash is not more protection, it’s prevention. Many accidents involving cyclists occur due to lack of visibility, and this problem only gets worse as the sun goes down. Luckily, Brooklyn-based Blink / Steady has jumped into the fray to offer a stylish and über functional bike light for nighttime riders.

Don’t be fooled by its small machined aluminum frame. Their light is waterproof and equipped with an accelerometer and a photosensor, so it knows when you’re moving in the dark and lights up automatically. Its twin 0.5W LEDs emit a very bright but distributed light that is visible from nearly 180 degrees, and lasts up to 200 hours on only two AAA batteries.

Contrary to other add-on lights, the Blink / Steady is also fixed directly to the seatpost so there’s no need to carry it to prevent theft. Install it one way, the light goes into blink mode, flip it the other side and it offers steady, continuous light. In the end, all you really need to do is set it, forget it, and bike the night away knowledge that the Blink/Steady has your safety at heart. If only the same thing could be said about the drivers next to you.

Editor’s Note: Blink / Steady has already raised enough money for their project on Kickstarter, so your assured a light should you decide to contribute.
