Off the top of our heads, what’s most important in the world at this very moment is finely tailored menswear, Facbeook surveillance cameras, and three young women standing trial in Moscow. We cast a wide night. We’re doing our best.

It’s a big and complicated world. We’re at tips [at] gearpatrol.com if you think there’s something we should know about.

1. What to Laugh + Cry About | Obesity

Gawker: the friend that makes the joke everyone wants to make but is too afraid of offending someone to actually make, plus the joke that makes you consider whether you want to actually be friends at all. They’ve handled weight issues with kid gloves, though, in response to the latest obesity map from the Center of Disease Control and Prevention. The fattest state? Mississippi. More interesting: “There is no significant relationship between obesity and education among men. Among women, however, there is a trend—those with college degrees are less likely to be obese compared with less educated women.” We just like to eat. Doesn’t matter how smart we are.

2. What to Wear | Basco

Barneys has resurrected its private label collection, Basco, according to the menswear guru at A Continuous Lean, who describes it as a collection that “mixed some bits of an American aesthetic with a clean continental vibe.” We like the crewneck sweater. There’s rarely a crewneck sweater we don’t like.

3. Where to Look | Into the Camera

It begins innocently enough: Facedeals installs a camera on the front door of the business, you check in by peeping the lens, the business gives you deals based on your “like” history and check-ins, then Gene Hackman has to blow up a building because you made a phone call! Good luck out there.

4. Where to Surf | Huntington Beach

You know us well enough to know that most of the time we’re not living vicariously (unless Lolo Jones gets a boyfriend, in which case we’ll be living vicariously, permanently). But if we can get out to Huntington Beach, CA, on a weekday to catch some tier 1 surfers crushing waves–we’re into that. Selectism was out there for the 2012 U.S. Open and has the goods here.

5. What to Read | Pussy Riot Closing Statements

That’s enough fun for one day. There’s serious drama unfolding in the world, particularly in Russia where female punk band Pussy Riot stands trial for “hooliganism and incitement of religious hatred” after performing an anti-Putin tune on the altar of Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ Our Saviour. Forget the news. Read their eloquent closing statements from the trial over at n+1.
