The future may not be televised in 3D after all, so how about 4k? Earlier this year, we saw a few prototypes at CES, and now Sony has officially announced its first set, boasting 3840 x 2160 resolution chops in the form of the 84-inch, 4K goliath: the Sony XBR-84X900. Since virtually no content out there provides the 4x HD resolution needed to show-off this monster’s attention to detail, Sony has incorporated a 4K X-Reality Pro picture engine for upscaling content and passive 3D capabilities (yes, still with glasses) to tide buyers over for at least a few years (Frozen Planet in 4k? We can’t wait.). Other goodies include the usual Smart TV capabilities, Wifi connectivity, and even a 10 Unit Live Speaker system, designed to replicate a 5.1 sound experience in stereo. If that doesn’t jive with you, they’re also detachable for integrating into an existing setup. Mums the word on a price, but be prepared to barter your first born once it arrives later this year — if the previously announced Sony VPL-VW1000ES 3D 4K Projector’s $16k sticker-price is any suggestion.
