Though it isn’t the hot hatch GTI version — which will no doubt show itself very soon — the 2014 Volkswagen Golf gives us a nice glimpse into the future of faster hatches from the German automaker. The new design isn’t radically different from its predecessor, but the changes are a welcome improvement.
Fresh off some time with Jenny Craig, the new Golf drops 220 pounds and looks sleeker in the process, with altered dimensions creating a lower, longer and wider body. The car’s interior is also expected to get a nice upgrade. There’s been no specific word on pricing or powertrains, but expect at least two gas engines, a diesel and even an electric version. The 2014’s base engine will most likely be a 1.8 liter turbo four-cylinder, replacing the current model’s 2.5 liter 5-cylinder. The new look gets our nod of approval, but we’re saving our drool for the GTI and a possible R32.
