Backpacks are ubiquitous, and sometimes too many pockets just means… too many pockets. In the case of the Marmot Urban Hauler ($50), less is more. Based on a centuries-old Japanese fishing bag, the Urban Hauler is as simple as a pack can get, short of a brown grocery bag and duct tape. Made of UpCycled fabrics (that’s green, we think), the pack has a large main compartment that cinches with a water-blocking gaiter and a smaller internal pocket to separate your smaller items.
Conveniently, the backpack straps convert to a handle for a different carrying method. A clean look in a world of overdone packs is refreshing; we don’t, however, recommend taking its heritage too far and using it for trips to the fish market.
