IF YOU GO

Summer is prime mating season for gators and mosquitos, so the ideal time to go freshwater fishing in the Florida Everglades is October through March. Naples Bay Resort has good kayak rentals. Mack’s Fish Camp will take you on airboat tours and fishing trips. And Tippy’s (305-559-6080) has airboat tours and pulled pork sandwiches.

Gators bigger than canoes. Mosquitoes that drink bug spray like it’s vodka. Bass, bluegill and redear sunfish. While summer in south Florida for some folks means frozen cocktails, rollerblades and shuffleboard, photographer and GP contributor Isaac Zapata indulges his wilder side at Everglades National Park. Recently, he set out by kayak and airboat in the Everglades and neighboring Big Cypress National Reserve to capture a glimpse of the incredibly rich ecosystem. What he saw just scratches the surface of the hundreds of birds, fish, mammals, reptiles and flora that populate the protected areas. There was no shortage of gators, though, and that was enough excitement for a day in the wetlands.
