Editor’s Note: It’s pretty clear that we’re passionate about gear. And with this series, we want to share with you our own personal favorite pieces. Over the next few months, we’ll bring you our staff’s 10 personal favorites — goods we personally own and use. The selection will run the gamut, from heirloom pieces to practical gear that can be easily procured. Last but not least, each will share one “holy grail” item that still remains the stuff of dreams, out of reach, but hopefully only temporarily so.

It’s true that as one of GP’s tech writers, a good portion of my time is spent testing new gear: headphones, speakers, fitness trackers, smartphones, etc. But I’m more than that, as my board-game-loving, craft-beer-drinking and Liverpool-F.C.-adoring friends can attest.

Smith Questa Sunglasses

Growing up in New Jersey, summers were spent at the shore and winters on the slopes. And since Smith has been crafting goggles and sunglasses for years, they were a brand I grew up with. These Questa’s were my summer ’16 pair and, miraculously, I didn’t lose them.

Sennheiser Momentum In Ear

Over-ear headphones aren’t my jam; they crush my ears and mess up my hair. I’ve been using these Momentums for the last few months, working in New York and commuting home on the train, and I can’t say enough good things about ’em.

Jabra Sport Pulse

I’ve killed way too many pairs of Apple EarPods on jogs to not believe in sweat-proof earphones. This pair is wireless and has a built-in VO2 Max fitness tester (to measure endurance).

Xbox One (500GB Console)

Fun fact: I actually own two Xbox Ones. One is located in my NYC apartment. The other at my parents’ house in Jersey. The rationale is that when I go home in the summer and need want to play FIFA, I can. And the true beauty of having two systems is, both of them being under my account, I can buy one game and play it on either system.

Bose SoundLink Mini II Bluetooth Speaker

The SoundLink Mini II might be the best wireless speaker for a budget-conscious person living in a New York City cubby. It’s really portable and sounds big.

Sony RX100 III

One of the great advantages of working at GP is the abundance of talented photographers — I’m not one of them, however. But I bought this bad boy, which is a few generations old, to practice.

‘East of Eden’ by John Steinbeck

I didn’t read East of Eden until after I graduated college. But since, I’ve read it several times cover to cover, and it’s cemented my belief that Steinbeck is the great American author.

Winter Session Slash Wallet

As far as I’m concerned, we live in a cashless society. I carry a few credit and business cards, my ID, and that’s it.

Sabahs

I wrote a feature on Mickey Ashmore and how he started Sabah a while ago, and since then I’ve continue to wear (and buy) his footwear.

Settlers of Catan

Get three or four friends and a couple bottles of red, and this board game (preferably the Seafarers expansion pack), and that’s a helluva good Friday night.

The Grail

Devialet Gold Phantom

If you hear and see this thing in action, you’ll understand — there’s nothing else like it. It shakes, and its 4,500 watts shake the room. Plus it’s finished in 22-carat gold. It’s way more than overkill for my small apartment, but one can dream, right?
