Introduction

Say hello to Gear Patrol for iPad.

Whether you read it on your morning commute or peruse while you’re kicking back after work with a drink, our new lightweight app is simply the best way to read GP. Far more than a website in a browser, it’s tailored entirely for the iPad melding what we think are the best parts of a blog, website and magazine into an experience that’s free of clutter and simple to read. Just add internet.

The app also features bigger, app-exclusive images for you to feast your eyes on in addition to a bevy of original photographs and films shot by our team. You’ll also find app-only gallery views, favorites, Facebook and Twitter, Instapaper, and one of our favorite features: the dynamic cover, which updates daily with original and contributor photography.

We’ve also added a new way to experience our popular curated video series Viewfinder, alongside Daily Briefings, a new series we’ve debuted with the app (see right), which delivers a daily drop of well-edited links and news each day so you can follow everything we’re reading: style to startups, cinema to CNN, and of course all the other great men’s publications out there. We call them the 1%.

And this is just 1.0. We’ve got plenty of new features and updates coming that we’ll roll out in not too distant future. Below, you’ll find more info, FAQ’s and tips to using the app, but let’s face it — there’s no better way to experience it than downloading the app and diving right in.

Gear well, gents.
Eric Y.

p.s. Need more incentive? We’re giving away two shiny new iPad 2′s for you to run the app on! More details below.

Help & FAQ

Q: How the heck do I use this app?
A: See the visual guide above.

Q: When will I be notified of updates to the app?
A: Keep your eyes peeled on the website or better yet, follow us on Twitter or like us on Facebook for faster updates. A future version of the app will include built-innotifications.

Q: Why use an app instead of the browser?
A: Consider it the magazine version of Gear Patrol. We love print-design, but this site is born from the web. This app lets us combine the two into a great new experience that we think will completely change the way you read GP. Not everything on the website is in the app, but we’re hard at work to make that happen. Holler at us in the feedback for below if you have any ideas, thoughts or concerns. Our ears are wide open.

Q: Where can I find my Favorites?
A: Once you’ve hit the star on the stories you like you’ll notice it turns orange. That means it’s saved. You can then find your favorites either through the menu button on the bottom of every story page or from the cover menu. You can go directly to any favorited story and swipe through them like your own personalized version of GP, or delete the ones you don’t want.

Q: Why Free?
A: Do you really have to ask? Just kidding. Our take: paying for something you can already get free on the web doesn’t make sense to us, just yet. We’re not the New York Times here… but apps like this cost an arm, leg (and maybe a foot too) to create. So, we worked with our awesome presenting sponsor, Lexus, who believes in innovative things like iPad apps. They helped make this free app possible. Less ads. More gear. All free. You’re welcome.

Q: The app doesn’t load anything. What gives?
A: As much as we’d love to magically send you content, this app requires an internet connection (preferably zippy). So, make sure you’re connected to internet via Wi-Fi or 3G. We’re not big fans of waiting for 200+ mb apps to download, so we made ours about as heavy as an MP3 instead of the digital equivalent of Encyclopedia Britannica. Also, the first time you load the app, give it a few extra seconds to wake up and get those extra 1′s and 0′s loaded.

Q: Why is there no landscape mode or pinch & zoom?
A: You’ll see landscape layouts in an upcoming version of the app. We feel its best to have less features, but make them work well. Like everything else, this app will continue to evolve and hopefully get more awesome as we roll out new iterations. Your constructive feedback is very much appreciated.

Q: Where are the comments?
A: Here’s our stance. We think comments are something best left with the 90′s along with boy bands. If you want to engage in a dialogue with us about what we feature, we’re happy to gab, but lets do it like gents over email, or even Facebook and Twitter where we can actually call you by your name, not anonymoushater1.

Q: Why aren’t all the images loading?
A: That may be an issue with the internet connection. We have a limited amount of server bandwidth so we’ve optimized things as best we can. This will improve in subsequent versions.

Q: Whoa, I found a problem. Now what?
A: Every once in a while you’ll run into something we didn’t during our Quality Assurance process (aka: us furiously tapping everything trying to make the app break). Also, your iPad might have something else running on it that we just didn’t foresee. We ask for your patience and send us questions through our support form below.

Q: How do I adjust my font size?
A: Sorry, right now you can’t. That one is coming soon.

Q: Who are the 1% you refer to in Daily Briefings?
A: Those are our friends, colleagues and must-read sites — many of which you can see in the footer of our site. In our minds 99% of the web is noise, and 1% create great content. We’ll be adding links and logos of all those fine folks in an upcoming version of the app so you can use GP as a launch pad to visit them.

Q: How do I get cool finds into the Cover, Daily Briefings or Viewfinder?
A: Send in your tips to tips@gearpatrol.com

Support

This is our first foray into apps so we’ll be the first to admit there will be some unforseen issues. But hey, we’re only human and we’re here to help. If you have a question, comment or cool idea, give us a shout through the contact form below. We’ll email you as soon as we can with answers, try to point you in the right direction, or try and figure it out together.
