We’ve heard Matusalem Rum Gran Reserva referred to as the “cognac of rums,” We’re not experts when it comes to rum, but what we do know is that when we went out, purchased a bottle and poured ourselves a drink over rocks it made us smile and say “damn, that’s good.” We’re not sure if a review requires more than that. matusalem.rum.gran.reserva.jpgMatusalem Rum comes in several variations, but do yourself a favor by spending a few more dollars for the Gran Reserva. It’s complex, impossibly smooth and rich with flavor. Personally, I love it over rocks but it will turn an otherwise paltry Long Island Ice Tea or Cuban Special (recipe after the jump) into the drink of the party. As a gold rum, I can think of few other brands I’d keep regularly stocked in my personal bar.

Cost: $35 @ BevMo!

The Cuban Special

1.5 oz. of Matusalem Gran Reserva
Juice from half a lime
1.5 oz of Cointreau
1.25 oz of Pineapple Juice
Rocks

Using a shaker with ice cubes, pour Matusalem Gran Reservea, add lime juice, pineapple juice and Cointreau. Shake well. Strain into chilled cocktail glass and garnish with a lime twist.
