Seems silly, but I often don't know when I'll be home, so this way I can turn the furnace on before I leave work and then come home to a warm house without wasting energy. Having an additional programmable device fulfills my gadgetophile needs, and the increased accuracy of the digital unit can certainly improve your home's energy efficiency.
