Gunning for the iphone, Danish Style

With the release of the N97 yesterday and the announcement of the 5800 XpressMusic hitting US markets in early 2009, it seems the world’s leading mobile phone supplier is finally wading into the battle for global smart phone domination.

Take a quick look of each at both of their specs and you’ll see what we mean.

Nokia N97

Touted as “the most powerful, multi-sensory mobile computer in existence,” by Jonas Geust, vice president for Nokia Nseries, this stunner is sure to shake up the current order of things.

Its features include:

• 3.5 inch widescreen touch display + full QWERTY keyboard.
• 3G connectivity with Quad-Band GSM
• 32GB on-board memory + microSD expansion for up to 16GB more
• 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss Tessar Lens
• TV-out
• 3.5mm stereo jack
• Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS
• Advanced tie-ins to social networking through its “social location” service

Cost: $700 @ Nokia.com, not currently availible in U.S.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

Though not as much of a standout as the N97, with a predicted subsidized price tag of $50 and a robust set of features, the XpressMusic is sure gain traction in the U.S.

Highlights include:

• Full touch screen with vibrating tactile feedback.
• Compatible with Input through Stylus
• 3-megapixel camera with LED Flash
• Included 8 gig micro SD card.
• Wi-Fi & Bluetooth
