Ages ago, I remember driving my family’s white 1992 Lexus ES300. My excitement for simply driving as a Tennessee permit holder masked the car’s utter blandness and miserable driving dynamics. I soon realized the car was a sleeper… literally, it just slept.

This summer, Lexus is unveiling a decidedly ‘cheaper’ hybrid. Dubbed the Lexus HS250h, the new hybrid will slot right in between the Lexus ES (gag) and the Lexus IS (not-so-gag). The four-cylinder Lexus (a first) will use Toyota’s Atkinson-cycle hybrid drive system to generate a miserly fuel sipping 187 horsepower. Its interior will be made of bio-plastics and other materials undoubtedly ensuring the Lexus will remain as isolated from the outside as mechanically possible (not necessarily a good thing for driving enthusiasts).

The Lexus HS 250h will be a technological parade with Bluetooth, satellite radio, voice recognition commands, USB iPod connectivity, multi-information LCD display, rear-view camera, 10 airbags (remember when 2 sounded great?), hard disk based navigation, and Lexus’ all new remote touch controller (mouse) that looks as if it were cribbed straight from a Sony VAIO computer.
