Gas prices are halfway reasonable (for the time being). Airplanes are overbooked and probably going to start charging for oxygen. And well, the weather’s warming up and its time to drive further than the damn office.

One of the greatest rights of an American man is the road trip, and we want to know what your favorite go-to’s are, no matter how tried & true or obscure.

So tell us Gear Patrol readers, what’s your favorite road trip destination?

Oh, and we’ve got a $50 Gas Card from BP burning a petrol soaked hole in our pocket. We’ll select a winner next Tuesday for the card, so start suggesting. It may not be enough to get you to your destination, but why not grab a few miles on Gear Patrol?

I'll be making two significant drives this summer. First to wedding at West Point in NY. Later I'll be making the annual family pilgrimage to the Outer Banks in NC. The Space Van is well up to the task, but barking for some new shoes.

    1. Learn how to slack line (due to recent GP contributors posts)
    2. Finally give CrossFit a fighting chance
    3. Visit: Chicago (in the summer I know.. stupid), ATL (even dumber), and Veracruz, MX
    4. Weekend trips to Huntsville for suvival classes (caused by reading Emergency)
    5. One deep sea fishing trip down in Galveston

Farmersburg, Indiana. Nothing to do there but watch time pass you by. Total bliss.

    Road trips for the summer:

-The "little" Big League parks in New England
-Ithaca, NY (Got a friend pusuing a Phd at Cornell)
    -NYC?

  • My buddies and I always make a pilgrimage to Bethpage every summer and sleep in the parking lot to get the first tee time on the Black Course. Not the most comfortable trip, but one I wouldn't miss.

Nothing is better than a Sunday drive through the winding side hills of western New York, listening to the exhaust note of your car. If you get thirsty on your meander through the country side you can stop at one of the few thousand vineyards and sip on a cool glass of Riesling. Or when your in the mood for some excitement just head over to Watkins Glen and get out on the track. Finger Lakes is definitely one of my favorite places to road trip.

From SoCal: Joshua Tree National Park, en route to a last minute poker game in Vegas
From New York: Adirondacks or North Fork (I'm not a Hampton'er)
From the Southeast: Anywhere in the Smoky Mountains

Newport R.I. So much to do or do nothing. You want romance, take the sunset yacht cruise around the harbor.

  • Tyler L says:

Road trip to Raleigh and the outer banks hopefully. Maybe wrightsville for a soccer tourney.

  • alan says:

nowhere. i hate the drive. i like the destination.

my road trip destination is chicago, the greatest city in the world! seriously, i love that place.

i also road trip to see friends in louisville and lexington and i look forward to road tripping to Red River Gorge again. it's been far too long.

but for all these destinations, i hate the drive.

  • Zane says:

I really don't get the opportunity for many road trips. We always talk about a golf trip, gambling trip, and baseball trip, but the years pass and still don't hit those.

I really enjoy our trips to Cow Creek Ranch for fly fishing - North of Santa Fe, NM.

  • JhB says:

San Francisco to San Diego via Santa Barbara/Monica along the PCH. Always a classic.

Just don't go to Tijuana (nodding head)

  • Rachael says:

I like driving down to Atlanta from my home in Knoxville, TN. There are lots of good restaurants and plenty of shopping opportunities down there.

  • Shawn says:

I don't get the chance to make as many road trips as I used to, but I have a fly fishing spot "somewhere" on the Holston. I love that drive every time I make it.

  • Dan says:

My wife and I are heading out west for a little American Southwest adventure. The plan is to drive from Las Vegas, to the Grand Canyon, to Moab and back… checking out as many National Parks as possible along the way. Should be a GREAT time and we are looking forward to it. =)

  • Joel T says:

A little drive to Key West is a pretty great time.

  • crystal says:

I would take a trip up to the smoky mountains, it is sooo pretty there!

  • William J. says:

Road trips are the best, they're a perfect escape from the day-to-day sh&#. Here in the midwest I've got access to the Great Lakes and Chicago, both fantastic getaways, but sometimes I enjoy hopping into my roofless '77 Ford Bronco, get down to Route 66 and drive until I run out of songs to play on my iPod. It's about the best thing this side of an ice cold beer.

I love taking a drive through the Great Smokey Mountains in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. In the fall, the leaves turn colors and they are so beautiful! That would be my favorite road trip! Maybe we'd run into Dolly!

  • Diane says:

My road trip will be from South Georgia to Milwaukee WI with 5 kids… 17, 15, 15, 6, 5. I will be the only adult and I am truly excited… Dinosaur world in Cave City KY, maybe hit the Louisville area, whatever. We will be on the road for 4 weeks… We love road trips!

  • Rikin says:

Check out Lake Norman, NC it's just about 45 min from Charlotte and yet it's under 3 hrs if you are in the southern parts of Virgina and West Virginia. We always get away to this destination when we want a short drive but a good change in weather. Great bars, close to Charlotte, and sweet Lake.
Also checkout Fayetteville, WV for some great outdoor fun and some great food. You can take a jet boat tour of the New River, go whitewater rafting, paintball, bungee jumping on Bridge Day, or ATV trails through the mountains. Or just kick back at some local favorites with big city taste at Pies and Pints or Sedona Grill. Either way WV is much closer than most of you would guess, easy on the pockets, and one heck of a time.
