About: Gents… my name is Dusty. To date, I have been resident amongst the masses of Gear Patrol devotees. Now, I have received a different calling. My charge is to shrug off the casual and carefree life of one who solely reads; I am to eschew the selfish pleasures man-info consumption, and to, instead, contribute mighty works of journalistic prowess suitable for the enlightenment of the Gear Patrol audience.
I’m sure that we would all agree that Gear Patrol shines as a bright beacon in the world of Men’s Lifestyle and Leisure. With numerous other sites and magazines vying for your attention, you read Gear Patrol because it cuts through the worthless flotsam and jetsam the other sites and blogs rehash day in and day out, bringing you a unique perspective on the latest gizmos and whatnots that matter to you. Well, it just so happens that I majored in gizmos and minored in whatnots.
Hopefully, my background and experiences will allow me to deliver piping-hot and tasty content direct to you from my areas of expertise. I was schooled in the beautiful Southeastern U.S. of A. There I spent only a modicum of time in actual class; instead wisely opting to hone other skills such as video game dominance (Ed: Dusty’s GoldenEye skills were unparalleled - full stop), media and entertainment studies, and indulging my competitive nature.
Post graduation, I sojourned for three years in southern Germany. There, I garnered a great appreciation for European culture as well as their longstanding brewing traditions/skills. Needless to say, travel is up there on my list of personal passions. Now I am back in the States where, by day, I work in sales and marketing in the construction industry. Also, I’m an on-again, off-again runner who enjoys many outdoor activities, preeminent among them being a fanatical, though rarely fantastical, golfer.
That being said, you may have to indulge some of my written idiosyncrasies. If my posts get too wacky, surely someone will let me know (Eric?). I plan to bring a bit of wit and wisdom to a community that clearly already has them in spades. Fellow readers, I shall do you proud by helping advance Gear Patrol in advancing you. After all, it’s a good bet that at least some of what entertains me just might entertain you too.

You might call us latter day Boy Scouts, but we at Gear Patrol have been riffing on a certain theme of late: Be Prepared. It’s just that you never know in what situation you might find yourself, and, when the unexpected strikes, a man wants to be able to be decisive and take charge, knowing that he’s equipped with the gear and the knowledge to see the situation through. It’s all very primal. To that end, what’s more primal than good old fashioned fire?
Tool Logic must agree, because they’ve brought two great “just in case” items together - an outdoors knife and fire starter - in the form of the SL Pro 2. This knife combo isn’t anything overly complex or elegant or pricey; it’s just a good solid addition to your pack anytime you wander off the beaten path. Tool Logic’s SL Pro Outdoor line is a combination of a 3″ 50/50 serrated blade (forged from 420J2 Stainless Steel), an emergency whistle, a bright LED flashlight, and one other tool of your choosing. That bonus is either a magnetic flashlight base, a Magnesium alloy fire starter, or a diamond sharpener. We like to go with the flammable model; hit the jump to hear why.
We tested the fire starter model (SL Pro 2) and recommend that as the most useful of the three, your specific needs notwithstanding. Making fire out of nothing at all (not to be confused with an Air Supply hit) is one of the most difficult survival skills to master. I don’t know about you, but should I ever have to spend the night exposed to the elements, I don’t want to be relied upon to generate the required friction of my own volition. The SL Pro 2’s fire starting abilities made quick work of my test wad of tender, and I surmise they’d be equally effective in the back country as in my back yard.
The Verdict: Unless you took your Bear Grylls pill this morning, check your pride and pack a tool that can start a fire. The SL Pro 2 will get the job done. That, and its integrated LED flashlight will help you find that lost granola bar at the bottom of your bag.
Cost: $39
Awesome knife Dusty. Makes me want to shed my 9-5 monkey suit and head for the mountains.
Monkey suit? Maybe 10 years ago. I think it's high time you admit you're gorilla sized now big P.
Monkey suit? Maybe 10 years ago. I think it's high time you admit you're gorilla sized now big P. Oh and also that knife is badass..
Do want.
Hey Multi-purpose usage knife that,s wonderful.
awesome Grim here it should useful for me.
Great knife! I bought the stealth all black version about 2 months ago.
You had me at 'Magnesium alloy fire starter'.
I have to admit though it looks a little on the small side. Or does Dusty just have big ol' bear paws?
Dave, aside from the actual measurements, I' d describe the knife on the small to medium size. Bear (paws) in mind that when striking the knife is closed, so its form-factor is smaller in that mode.
