Marshall, a great point here. Many of these concepts can apply to other types of work beyond home repair, such as auto D.I.Y.

I'm pretty stupid and clumsy when it comes to vehicular matters, but even I once manged to replace the radiator in my 89 BMW 318. $40 at the junkyard FTW!

This is an excellent addition to the 30 Days series. I'm a broke college student so DIY is often all I can afford, but I'm also an architecture student so I'm not willing to settle for furniture involving cinder blocks. Most recently I replaced the rear brake system on my car. If you don't have one already, invest in a Hanes manual… extremely useful. Between that and the helpful guys at my local NAPA store, everything works fine and I saved $400!

My DIY projects usually don't end well. I'm too much of a perfectionist and not skilled enough to perform many tasks on my own, but on that same token, it peeves me to pay someone to do a job I could have done better.

You covered the most important requirement. Figure out how much money it costs you in your time and rarely will you save money. You may reduce costs but most times you are not saving money.
Plus its much easier to hold a professional accountable for any mistakes than realize that you framed all the door openings too short and have to buy solid wood doors so that you can cut 2" off of each of the doors....I mean...uh...I have a friend that had to do that. Not me...it was a friend of mine. You don't know him...uh he live in Canada.

Thanks for the good word and I agree with you. Excellent article Dusty. I think sometimes we can get caught up in the notion that we should take on any task by ourselves, or else risk somehow being less manly. Glad to hear you talk from a practical point of view. Also TJ Nick, be advised that our commenting system does allow the word "ass" so no worries about your comment getting deleted or being blocked. Cheers.
