absinthe-and-flamethrower_edited-1Though you might consider the following to be somewhat oxymoronic, the back cover of William Gurstelle’s latest effort, Absinthe & Flamethrowers, describes the content within as having been “written for smart risk takers.” That sounds like a group of chaps who frequent this little corner of the interwebs, all of you Gear Patrol readers and writers.

Gurstelle’s previous book, Backyard Ballistics, offered a compendium of 13 ballistic devices to be built and fired in your backyard (the book was aptly titled, you see). Now, with Absinthe & Flamethrowers, the author tackles two main queries: “Why Live Dangerously?” and “How to Live Dangerously?” Once you’ve digested this quick-reading volume, you’ll be fully prepared to unleash your inner MacGyver by making black powder, properly throwing knives, cracking a bullwhip, and more seemingly reckless man-actions.

Just don’t let your wife/girlfriend/mom/significant other catch you reading this. They will neither approve nor understand. Best to go it alone.

Cost: $12
