garmin-edge-500-cycling-gps-based-computerAnyone looking to tally precise details of their cycling endeavors should mull over buying the Edge 500. This lightweight GPS-Based cycling computer is a data nuts dream and calculates everything including speed, distance, calories burned, altitude, climb, and descent. While monitoring, it also records this information for comparison purposes which trainers can access on their home computer through Garmin’s course feature.

The device attaches easily to the stem or handlebars of your bike, and, thanks to it’s low profile, minimally impacts drag. Removing the Edge from the mount just involves a simple quarter-turn. Sharing your results with fellow enthusiasts through the Garmin Connect community is another exciting feature for those with overly developed competitive instincts (a.k.a Patrick “Balboa” Tuttle). Don’t blame Garmin, though, if your inner Armstrong isn’t quite what you had hoped for.

You can get your hands on the Garmin Edge 500 starting in the 4th quarter of 2009. For an extra $100, Garmin will include a compatible Heart Rate and Cadence monitor to up the tracking ante. Curious about other bike related gear? Check out our list of 10 bicycle commuter essentials.

Cost: $250-$350 depending on version
