10 Best, Most Anticipated Video Games (Late 2009)

Your Guide to the Next Big Thing(s)

By Dusty Overby on 9.29.09

Borderlands

Release Date: October 20

borderlands

The first game on this list to offer up a truly new property, Borderlands attempts to marry traditional first-person gameplay with RPG elements. Not that this hasn’t been done before (Oblivion, Fallout 3, anyone?), but here it’s offered in a unique, hand-drawn art style and arranged to offer a robust co-op experience in addition to the single player mode. Oh yeah, and there are lots and lots of guns from which to choose.

Cost: $59

Left 4 Dead 2

Release Date: November 17 (Xbox 360 Exclusive)

l4d2

Left 4 Dead offered one of the all-time greatest cooperative experiences, so it remains to be seen if the follow-up effort can duplicate the fun. In our opinion, all signs point to yes. New survivors, more (lots more) zombies, and a defensive arsenal capable of mowing through the undead will certainly not disappoint.

Cost: $55

God of War Collection

Release Date: November 10 (PS3 Exclusive)

gowcollection

God of War Collection is basically two of the very best games from the PS2, digitally remastered for HD play, offered at a value price. Yes, please. For some, this will be their first time out with destructive deity, Kratos. All we can say is, “buckle up”.

Cost: $37

Grand Theft Auto IV: Episodes from Liberty City

October 29

gtaeps

In a classy move, developer Rockstar Games plans to release the two expansion for GTA IV, The Lost and the Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, as a standalone disc. By not requiring a copy of the original game to play, new players (or those who’ve already sold their copy) should be enticed to get in on the unsavory fun. In any case, the two expansions represent plenty more hours of streetwalking in Liberty City.

Cost: $37

The Saboteur

Release Date: December 8

saboteur

With no shortage of WWII games to choose from, The Saboteur introduces some unique gameplay mechanics through which the player experiences the protagonist, a man fighting a guerrilla war against the occupying Germans. Most notably, the art style of the game reflects the force strength of the enemy be ranging from near black and white display (indicating a high concentration of forces) to vibrant color once a zone has been liberated.

Cost: $57

Speculation Bonus: Perfect Dark

Release Date: TBD (Xbox Live Arcade Exclusive)

perfectdarl

Your Gear Patrol editors are nothing short of devotees to the N64 classic shooter, Perfect Dark. Having been a tick disappointed in Joanna Dark’s next-gen debut (PD Zero), we’re basically overjoyed at the prospect of a polished up, Xbox Live Arcade edition of one of our all-time favorite games. If anything could ever impair us to the point that we’d have to stop writing Gear Patrol, it would be the ability to face off with Magsecs over Xbox Live. No worries, we’ll find a way.

Cost: TBD

There you have it; now you know what will be keeping us busy over the waning days (more likely late nights) of 2009. As always, we more than welcome your feedback – we openly demand it! Let us know if you agree with our selections, or if you’ve got a few others that you’re looking forward to (just remember, Bioshock 2 doesn’t come out until February). There are lots of good choices here, so get to work on that speech where you try to convince your better half that video games are an outstanding entertainment value. Just hit me up if you need tips on that.
