Shaving is an art; it’s a male ritual to be appreciated, never rushed. We here at Gear Patrol take great pleasure in shaving, and, when the opportunity came to test a new shaving product, we jumped at the opportunity.

Bump Patrol (no relation to Gear Patrol, but rather, confirms that patrols of all sorts are awesome) makes a variety of shave products such as gels and aftershaves. We dispatched one of our own to face field test their latest shave gel and aftershave. What follows is that man’s tale of shaving glory.

To test these products I ran some hot water, queued up some good jazz music, and prepped my Mach 3. I typically prefer creams and a big nostalgic Santa Clause-esce style lather over shave gels.  I’ve had bad luck with gels in the past because they generally do not lather and clear gel led to missed spots. When I grabbed a dab of Bump Patrol and rubbed it on my cheek I had instant cooling lather; my faith in shave gels restored.

Now truth be told, my facial hair is quite average. It grows pretty thoroughly across my face and, in order to look sharp, daily shaving is required. Some men have issues with bumps (inflamed hair follicles due to shaving) and ingrown hairs which can also be a challenge. The beauty of Bump Patrol is the fact that it works on faces of all sorts. Many of their products center around men with sensitive skin or bumps, yet I found the products to work beautifully on my “average” face.

I experimented with the aloe vera gel on my left cheek and the cool menthol shave gel on my right. Both gels lathered up nicely, and it didn’t take much to apply to my face. The aloe vera gel was a clear gel that felt quite soothing, and the cool gel came out a deep blue color that smelled great. I really can’t pick a favorite between the two, but I’ll say that both gels provided a wonderful shave.

Upon completion of the shave I moved on to Bump Patrol’s aftershave.  Although they offer many varieties of aftershave, I choose the sensitive skin aftershave. The pungent aroma I often associate with aftershave was absent from Bump Patrol, and was for the most part odorless. I applied a few drops to my hands and touched them to my freshly shaven face.  I feared I’d reenact the infamous screaming scene from Home Alone, but was satisfied with the results.

Clearly, we’re impressed with the performance of the Bump Patrol line. Have you tried Bump Patrol or have another go-to shave product? Let us know in the comments section.

  • May I also suggest that at night, men should wash their face, splash some rubbing alcohol on shaved area and apply bump patrol before going to bed. Razor bumps tend to creep up while we're sleep. (At least for me anyways).

Bump Stopper-2 [ http://www.bumpstopper.com/ ] is also a good product to use against the dreaded ingrown hairs.

One of my favorite shaving products:

" men should wash their face, splash some rubbing alcohol on shaved area and apply bump patrol before going to bed."

I totally disagree. You should never need to put rubbing alcohol on your face unless you get mauled by a raccoon and need to kill the germs quick. That will only make things worse by drying out the area.

If you really care about getting a good shave that will condition your face and prevent razor bumps and ingrown hairs, wet shave.

Go out and purchase a double edge razor, pre-shave oil and a non-aerosol shaving cream. All of these gel and aerosol products are gimmicks and not needed.

Gentlemen have been wet shaving for years and its time all men get back to doing it. It's cheaper, provides an effortless smooth shave and makes no impact on the environment nor your skin. All of the products I personally use are all natural. You can learn more from the badgerandblade website, it will change your shaving routine from being a chore to very enjoyable.

I really like the GP website and would like to seem more articles on wet shaving and the products and techniques around it. Too many mens websites are pushing crap like Axe and other quick fix products with loads of chemicals. Our grandfathers were doing it right, so dump the mach 3's and go Double edge, you'll never look back.

  • In response to Mike P:

There is no one correct way to shaving. For example, you mentioned pre-shave oil.

As a guy who gets serious and often blistering razor bumps, I avoid anything with "oil" in it.
Oil of any kind is out for me as it clogs up my pores and makes matters worst for my shaven face.

I was a little loose with my wording. But I do use a cotton ball and apply rubbing alcohol to my face and then apply bump patrol (or bump stopper-2) at night. It helps my face and I don't get a serious breakout of razor bumps.

    Again this works for me.

As far as "wet shaving" — this is the first time I ever heard such a thing. Hopefully, Gear Patrol will investigate and do a how-to on "wet shaving." (the term sounds sexually to me . . . but I digress)

Anyway, Mike P, let just say that we agreed to disagreed on our shaving methods to avoid the dreaded razor bumps.

P.S.: If anyone ever gets mauled by a raccoon, fuck the rubbing alcohol . . . go see a damn doctor!

    Greetings

While everyone has a lot of valuable contributions I think simple is always the easiest. For wet Shaving and that means shaving with a razor, should be performed, in the shower or just after getting out. Lather face well with Bump Patrol Shaving Gel. This will hold the water in your skin, surround the hairs and set them up for shaving. Moisture is a key element for a good shave. Oils can clog pores and sometimes become a barrier against moisture. True oil provides some slip, but razor blades tend to last longer, clean easier, and move better in wet environment. The razor is important, we use and recommend multi-blade razors. They are stainless steel, covered in Teflon and move as one blade across the face and neck. Check out the Directional Shave Method on http://www.bumppatrol.com and you will see the exact strokes needed to get the perfect shave.

Dry Shaving is done with Electric Razors, Special Shavers like the Andis Profoil or Wahl Shaver, some guys like to use trimmers, edgers and even clippers. Whatever you use though if you follow the protocol for Zone Shaving you will arrive at a smooth face minus the bumps on the neck, and around Adam’s apple.
The shave is performed in zones Zone 1 is the neck up to the chin. Zone 2 include the chin and the area between bottom lip and point of chin. Zone 3 and 4 are cheek and jaw.
First apply a thin layer of Bump Patrol After Shave to set the hairs up, let dry oh yeah use the Original, or Extra Strength. Make sure your blades are clean and lubricated. Begin shaving in zone 1, by utilizing this method of shaving you start your shave in the most sensitive area with a cool blade, and end your shave in the least sensitive area. When finished with Zone 4 wipe or wash gently excess hair from face , pat dry. Apply Bump Patrol After Shave. Special Tip: Pour the after shave into palm of one hand. From the same hand smooth it on face without rubbing palms together. The one handed method is most effective way to apply.
    Stay Smooth
