A Capable Offering from a Computing Unknown
ViewSonic may not be a household name in the world of computing, but that shouldn’t distract buyers from seriously considering the company’s first 13-inch laptop. Called the ViewBook Pro (clearly copying Apple), the laptop’s body is made of an aluminum alloy chassis that tapers to a point along the front edge. Just 1 inch thick with a foot print of 12.7 x 9.4 inches and a weight of 3.6 pounds, it’s definitely travel-friendly without being obnoxiously small and hard to use. Its 13.3-inch LED-backlit display has a resolution of 1280 x 800 and features an old school 16:10 aspect ratio which provides more vertical viewing screen space for web browsing and document editing. An included HDMI-out port is also an appreciated addition, as is a webcam, despite it being only 1.3 megapixels. Besides featuring a fingerprint scanner, the ViewBook Pro also includes another standout security feature called AntiSteal, which, once armed, prevents anyone from moving the laptop by sounding an alarm. These details aside, this laptop is average in the performance arena and includes a 1.3-Ghz Intel Core 2 processor, 2GB of Ram, 5,400-rpm 320GB hard drive, and integrated Intel GMA 45000MHD graphics. In terms of power, the included 6-cell battery produces 5 hours of juice, which can be enhanced be swapping out the machines DVD drive with an additional 3-cell battery good for another 2.5 hours of use. All in all, its a more than capable machine for those looking for basic web browsing and productivity functionality.
