30 Essential Movies | Cool Hand Luke

By Jon Gaffney on 4.27.10

Another member of the National Film Registry, Cool Hand Luke, is one the great films in Paul Newman’s stellar career. The movie follows Luke Jackson, a decorated war vet, that has a bit of trouble following rules. After decapitating parking meters while drunk he winds up in a Georgia penitentiary for a 2 year stint. Constantly pushing the limits with the guards he ends up an anti-hero to the other inmates, but a punching bag for the guards. A relevant portrayal of the raging anti-establishment movement of the later 60′s, it was nominated for 5 Academy Awards taking home one. Cool Hand Luke‘s most poignant point might be that not all heroes get to die a hero’s death.
