Sonos S5 Black

Better Duds For Better Sound

By Ethan Dougherty on 6.3.10

The Sonos ZonePlayer S5 is back in its evening duds with the Sonos S5 Black ($399). Same package, different color. A good thing since the Sonos S5 is already a well-simplified, great sounding, portable home system. 2 tweeters, 2 mid-range drivers, and a subwoofer powered by individual dedicated digital amplifiers with DSP circuitry delivers what we found to be surprisingly robust room-filling sound. The Sonos S5 Black will play your iTunes or music collection, internet radio, or a variety of other music services (Last.fm, Pandora, Sirius, etc) and works with either an existing Sonos multi-room music system, Sonos controller ($349), PC, or your iPhone/iPod Touch via a free downloadable app. You can even pair up two S5′s for a 10 driver audio tour de force. With the ability to expand, the Sonos S5 and corresponding components are definitely one of the best (if not priciest) whole-home wireless sound systems.
