Buying a new set of irons can be daunting. It’s a big investment and you have to find a set that works for so many different shot needs. Some sets may have great scoring irons but you can’t elevate the long irons to maximize distance. Conversely, some have explosive distance but the look and feel leave you scratching your head. TaylorMade quelled those concerns last year when they introduced their Burner Irons. Each iron in the set was specifically designed to be the best individual club (be it a 5-iron or pitching wedge), then they simply assembled them into a set and stormed the golfing community. Gone were the days where a 6-iron was simply a shorter, more angled 5-iron.
As with all great innovations, a new year brings iterative improvements. The new Burner 2.0 Irons are an amazing blend of technology and design aesthetics. When you distill down what TaylorMade has really done it’s quite staggering. Each club has its own very unique blend of face thickness, head shape, sole width and CG location. Even the shafts have a proprietary design with different kick points, making long irons easier to hit and short irons easier to spin. Cementing all of that innovation is the core of TaylorMade’s long-standing, but ever improving Inverted Cone Technology. That technology had to be custom tweaked for each iron to incorporate that club’s very specific attributes. The package works brilliantly and they’ve done it with a thinner top line then the predecessor that looks and feels every bit the player’s iron.
To really see if TaylorMade’s claims held up, we took our set of Burner 2.0 Irons to our friends at Golf Manhattan (thanks guys) to run them through their shot analysis simulator. What we found was pretty impressive. Even compared to clubs that are only a few seasons old, the Burner 2.0 irons had much higher spin rates and more boring launch angles across the board. After copious time on the virtual range and a few simulated rounds, the final test was on the course. The Burner 2.0 Irons did everything you could ask. Shots were consistently on-line and distances were true, even in the cold, late fall weather. They really are the consummate easy swinging irons, perfect for the high handicapper down to the high single digit golfer.
