Or so the thought must have been with the creation of Ski Dubai, a 242,000 square foot indoor ski/snowboard slope with year round snow. Ski Dubai features 5 runs that fall a total of 196 feet over 1300 feet enclosed in a 30 degree Faranheit environment. Ski Dubai also stakes claim to the world’s first indoor black diamond run. Either way, probably too tame for the skiers and boarders here on Gear Patrol, but hey, you know what they say: “When in Dubai…”

Squeeze in one half sled, one half adrenaline rush and you’ve got yourself way to occupy the last of the winter months. If not, I’m sure the slopes in colder climates will serve just as well for your run on the Mad River Rocket.

The Mad River Rocket began when an architect named David Sellers tried to find a way to slide down the hills of Vermont. What started as two toy toboggan’s sliced in half and pinned together and since then transformed into what you see here - a snow forging rocket.

The hull of the Mad River Rocket is fabricated from thick, virgin polyethylene. Sure-grip, ribbed knee pads are designed for comfort and performance and a quick release belt. There are two holes drilled into the bow for the inevitable walk uphill or trek from the lift.

What this means to you: We’ve had a Mad River Rocket for over a month now. We took it with us on the last couple of ski/board trips and in less than two runs all our cronies were clamoring for a turn at the helm of the Mad River Rocket. The inevitable comparisons to the sled scene in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation were shared with liberal outbursts of “Clark, the shitter’s full.”

This past weekend we hit the slopes pretty damn hard. Boarding, skiing, carving, grinding, jumping and generally avoiding trees on closed trails. It rocked. It would have also rocked our ankles and feet if it weren’t for some new gear we just got a hold of, namely boots.

Putting together a pair of Dalbello boots with K2 Public Enemy skis the diamante negros tracked like green circles. The Proton 12 Carbon is Dalbello’s top performing in the series. It’s engineered for aggressive and accomplished skiers looking for maximum support with precise and comfortable foothold - well, like most boots. The extra stiff carbon reinforced cuff spoiler and locked cuff boost power, responsiveness and control at high speeds.

What this means to you: There are few boots that provide you more precision control than the Delbello Proton 12. It’s a healthy sum to swallow for a pair of boots, but if you even make a fair share of trips to the slopes then we couldn’t recommend a better boot.

The Oakley A Frame is a lens designed to keep you moving on the slopes whether you ski or snowboard. It has a three-tiered defense approach with surge ports to control airflow, F-3 Series anti-fog treatment, and dual lens design to reduce fog with a thermal barrier of trapped air.

The lens uses high definition optics with 100% UV filtering, impact protection that meets ANSI Z87.1/ASTM F659 standards, durable yet flexible urethane and triple-layer polar fleece foam with moisture wicking. Frankly, we just like that we could order ours in orange.

The Airboard Classic has been around for a few years and it’s just as much fun in the snow each time you bust it loose from your closet. Just like a boogie board but on the hills and mountains nearby the Airboard makes inclines more fun than you ever thought possible.

It’s durable, easy to control and even importantly can reach fantastic speeds (think National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation sled scene). There’s no restrictions of where the Airboard Classic can go. Keep up with the rest of the slope goers on any terrain.

The Airboard inflates in less than 3 minutes with its own included hand pump, weighs about 6 pounds and packs down to fit easily into any backpack.

What this means to you: Just because you don’t board or ski doesn’t mean you can’t have more fun. But if you do either of those, this is well worth your winter slope time.

The reoccurring problem of foggy goggles has been significantly reduced with anti-fog goggles. Skiers and snowboarders alike appreciate this technology.

Powder season is nearly upon us and we’re already itching here to get out on the slopes and chow some powder. The folks here at GP are split between skiiers and boarders so the Voile Split Decision MOJO splitboard is something we’ve got our eyes on using this winter. For those of you not familiar with splitboards, the basic premise is that two skis join to form a snowboard giving you a dual experience on the slopes.
