Economically, it's tough to be an environmentalist, especially when your life starts sounding like an expensive Mastercard commercial: organic strawberries ($4.99), Envirocycle Composter ($179.99), Camry hybrid ($26,140). But LED chip-maker Cree's excursion into the lightbulb market aims to make living the green life a little easier (priceless). Their 40-watt and 60-watt Cree LED Bulbs -- positioned to offer consumers quality lighting at a low price -- last 25,000 hours, or 25 times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs. The company estimates that by replacing just five bulbs with Cree LEDs, the average consumer will save $61 a year on electric bills.


The bulb's true innovation lies in the Cree LED Filament Tower, which allows the bulb to maintain the familiar incandescent shape while offering the increased energy savings of an LED bulb. But, unlike other low-priced LEDs, Cree lights emit warm light, boast a ten-year warrantee and are dimmable, making them the smart choice for the economist, the environmentalist and anyone who's trying to set the mood.

In short: products that define or defy their respective categories to better the life of the modern man.



METHODOLOGY


The GP100 is not a contest influenced by marketers or brands, nor is it a ranking by specifications as determined by uniform tests. Instead, it starts with a comprehensive list of nominees released in the calendar year, researched and compiled by our editorial team of obsessed experts across all of Gear Patrol's major areas of interest including Motoring, Technology, Style, Home, Spirits, Outdoor and Watches. Brands are not part of the selection process. Nominees are then debated in context of the past, present and future of their respective fields. Which selections stand as significant innovations, category busters or faithful monuments to the icons of history?
