Single-Button Ludlow Blazer and Sportcoat

Traditionally, the single-button sportcoat has been reserved for cocktail parties and groomsmen’s tuxedos with peak lapels. In the last decade, though, the single-button saw a renaissance of versatility as the modern man learned that going from the boardroom to the barroom shouldn’t require a change in attire. J.Crew, that exemplar of stylistic modernity, took this idea to heart in their new Ludlow Sportcoat and Blazer


The single button Ludlow Blazer updates the original Ludlow suit jacket by shortening it one inch in the body and adjusting the height of the button, the result of which is a svelte silhouette, notch lapels and an edginess that befits both business and pleasure. The shoulders are curved; the notch lapels are slim, and the double vent means the jacket won’t bunch when you sit down. A partial lining and tailored cut maintain the jacket's shape despite the softness of its pima cotton fabric. The one-button Sportcoat maintains a slightly more office-ready look in Italian Wool and the same measurements and button placement of the original Ludlow  cut.


Sure, there are other jackets to be considered when looking for a go-to, many of which are actually made by J.Crew. In fact, the two-button Ludlow comes in several styles and fabrics, including pima cotton, velvet, and cashmere; there's even a very tempting unstructured version. But there are a few small details we find irresistible in the single-button. Like a navy suit or a pair of wingtips, the Ludlow single-button won’t be going out of style anytime soon.

Q. The Ludlow suit quickly became a wardrobe staple for guys. What made this year the right time to introduce single button versions of it? 


A. It took us two years to create the original Ludlow suit. We are always looking for ways to update it and keep it current…introducing a one-button version just felt like the next logical step.  It has a cleaner, dressier feel, and we love the elegant, deep V it creates. It reminds me of old Hollywood leading men like Jimmy Stewart and Cary Grant

 


Q. How is the cut of this jacket different from other Ludlow sportcoats? Is there a specific look it's ideally suited for over other options? 


A. The cut of our one-button Ludlow is the same as our other Ludlow sportcoats  but it has a slightly more formal feel to it.  It's like a new, modern dinner jacket.  As a formal option, wear it with a dress shirt and tie which elongates the silhouette.  For a more casual look it also looks great paired with a pair of dark jeans and a t-shirt. 

 


Q. Are certain types of shirt collars a better match for this jacket?

A. We are always a fan of a good spread collar! 



Q.  J. Crew is currently offering this jacket in several different fabrics. What's your favorite of the moment? Are you excited about any new options coming in the future?


A. The single-button Ludlow is available in a heather charcoal Italian wool.  It's a super light weight fabric that can be worn year-round. I wore mine to a wedding in Shelter Island over the summer and it was perfect!For Spring and Summer we are launching the Ludlow in different textures and colors both in sportcoats as well as suiting.  We will also have a new one-button with peaked lapels which I'm really excited about!
