You expect sports cars to be fast but lacking in capacity and oftentimes creature comforts. You expect SUVs to be capable on rough terrain but lacking in performance, comfort and style. There are very few vehicles out there that can change your expectations about a specific type of car, and that's why the all new Land Rover Range Rover is so special. Only the fourth new design in over forty years, Land Rover’s flagship raises the bar on what a luxury SUV can and should possess -- eye-catching design, impressive off-road prowess, a luxurious and refined environment, and uncompromised on-road performance  -- without losing the iconic Range Rover silhouette and brand identity. The new Range Rover never ceases to impress.

The new car loses some of the predecessor’s visual cabin height, resulting in a look that’s leaner, crisper and more elegant. Designers were wise to keep the same iconic body shape of past Range Rovers while making the overall look truly fresh. A larger grille and new LED day-running lights are immediately noticeable and both head and taillights elegantly taper towards the body. Front quarter panel vents are simplified but more noticeable and very masculine. The Range Rover’s interior is also a vast improvement with a cabin that’s worthy of royalty.  Expanses of fine leather throughout the cabin are rich and comfortable, and the beautiful wood trim is an exercise in  tasteful sophistication. The driving position is ideal, with a beefy and bespoke steering wheel to control the direction of your refined hauler. Since Land Rover wisely reduced the number of control buttons by 40 and made the center console far more simple to navigate, with large climate control knobs and ultra-clear TFT/LCD gauges,

the interior is also easier to operate. But it’s not just driver pleasure -- your rear passengers gain a whopping 4.7 inches of legroom, and there’s cargo space to spare.


Best of all (at least to us) is the way the new Range Rover drives both on and off road. In 375 hp HSE and 510 hp Supercharged editions, its capabilities are stellar.  The 8-speed automatic transmission is well-mated to the the powerful V8s, and the Range Rover is responsive and quick beyond what a vehicle this size should ever be. The increased use of aluminum in the chassis and in the entire construction of the body drops the Range Rover’s weight be several hundred pounds, which vastly improves both acceleration and handling. Two locking differentials and the Range Rover automatic Terrain Response 2 system make the Range Rover even more of a mountain goat than ever before, even in standard street tires. The 2013 Range Rover is a capable, creature-comfortable, capacious and all-conquering, all of which make it one of the best vehicles we’ve ever had the experience of driving.

METHODOLOGY


The GP100 is not a contest influenced by marketers or brands, nor is it a ranking by specifications as determined by uniform tests. Instead, it starts with a comprehensive list of nominees released in the calendar year, researched and compiled by our editorial team of obsessed experts across all of Gear Patrol's major areas of interest including Motoring, Technology, Style, Home, Spirits, Outdoor and Watches. Brands are not part of the selection process. Nominees are then debated in context of the past, present and future of their respective fields. Which selections stand as significant innovations, category busters or faithful monuments to the icons of history?
