Brooklyn performance-wear brand Outlier has continually shattered myths about the tenuous relationship between fashion and function. Their nonwoven Dyneema backpack turns an otherwise ugly yet scrappy material into a rugged style item; their doubleweave canvas Slim Dungarees integrate Cordura-grade nylon for toughness and look sharper than any pair of jeans. The company's latest innovation is the Merino/Co Pivot shirt, created to survive and even thrive during one of clothing's most grueling real-world tests -- travel. 


These days, merino wool's remarkable properties aren't exactly a secret. Look at the baselayers put out by most major outdoor brands and you'll likely find the material on the tag. That's because the list of Merino's talents is longer than Dillinger's rap sheet. It's softer than traditional wool and far more comfortable next to the skin. It retains heat when you need it and breathes when you don't. It wicks moisture away from the skin like a sponge, absorbing up to a third of its own weight without feeling damp. It's highly pliable and provides stretch without losing shape, making it admirably resistant to creasing and wrinkles. It's even naturally antimicrobial, deterring the bacteria responsible for odors.

Outlier had previously leveraged these properties in t-shirts and henleys, but coaxing the ultra-fine material into the crisp structure of a button-up shirt was another story altogether. Such a fabric as was necessary simply didn't exist. Eventually the company convinced their friend Jose Fernandez to found Global Merino to create an ultra-fine merino organic cotton blend. Combining the cutting-edge material with Outlier's patent-pending Pivot Sleeve design was the next logical step.
