Caribbean in a Bottle

Tasting Notes: Appleton Estate Reserve Rum

It’s a commonly known fact that the months between New Years and Spring are dreary and depressing, especially for those of us on the East Coast. Being strong believers in self medication taking action, Gear Patrol set out to find a stiff drink to bust our winter blues, and came back with the Appleton Estate Reserve Jamaican Rum.

Appleton Estate is the premier rum producer in Jamaica, with a history of producing sugar cane in the Nassau valley since 1655. The Reserve is a light mahogany and honey rum made from a combination of 20 premium rums chosen by Appleton’s Master Blender. It has characteristics of a mixing rum and of a sipping rum, with a warm, smooth texture and hints of spice and dried fruit. Or, more precisely, it’s like drinking a Caribbean island.

But here is the trick to its power: not only is it an incredibly smooth spirit on its own, it can be used in a mixed drink for the lady (Daiquiri? Mai Tai?), which warms the soul better than any alcohol.
