The Audi TT started out as an exercise in modern Bauhaus Auto Union design and it’s been hugely successful in both 2+2 and roadster versions. Though neither car has been deemed especially quick, that all changes with the TT RS, a balls-to-the-wall 2+2 that makes other sports cars sweat like an elk in Ted Nugent’s backyard. With a 5-cylinder turbocharged engine that spews out 360 horsepower and a mindblowing supercar 0-60 time of 3.6 seconds, the TT RS means business. All this for the bargain basement price of $60K means that you get Corvette ZR1-like performance but with German engineering, svelte looks and an interior that won’t embarrass you in front of your friends. And what a car it was to drive.

On the freeway, the fat tires and exhaust note droned rather than sang and didn’t sound especially pretty, but in the twisties, the TT RS was downright Olympic with precise steering, robust handling and fantastic body control. The car pulls away with authority and makes you feel more competent than you actually are. Some think of it as the “poor man’s 911″, and that may be true. Frankly, all we know is we came away lusting. The TT RS reaches its apex with this insane rendition of an already fantastic car, and GP got to toss it around a bit.
