Slick, quick and as luxurious as the day is long, the 2014 Buick Lacrosse ($34,060) redefines what an American flagship can be. On roads rife with cookie-cutter shapes and duplicated automotive designs, the Lacrosse displays an edgy and elegant presence that cuts a fresh path through the field of American luxury cars. It not only dares to be different, but delivers comfort and convenience aplenty; Buick’s made all the right moves to deliver a rewarding driving experience.

Approaching the Lacrosse’s freshened face, you’ll find a look that’s not only cleaner but bolder and more unified, including the cascading waterfall grille, a dramatically sculpted hood and a winged LED light cluster that all complement the fluid shape of Buick’s finest. The rear of the Lacrosse has been massaged to match, with wraparound LED taillamps, a beautifully integrated, subtle lip spoiler and a full-width chrome detail, all of which lend a wider, stronger look for 2014.

The interior delivers the fine leather and finishes we’ve come to expect from the new generation of Buicks. Refined to an even greater degree in 2014, the cabin boasts plenty of wood and matte chrome touches that are as good to look at as they are to touch. The new center stack makes quick work of controls with fewer buttons and a customizable IntelliLink infotainment system; this is an atmosphere in which any driver would be proud to sit. They’d be able to hear themselves boast about it, too, thanks to Buick’s QuietTuning, which insulates drivers and passengers from all of the unwanted din of the outside world. The bragging can continue with plenty of standard features like eight-way power driver’s seat, dual-zone climate control, high-resolution center screen and remote start.

And though you may be alert as an owl on night watch duty, the Lacrosse Driver Confidence Package backs up your safe mindset with tools like Automatic Collision Preparation, which helps detect potential impacts and prepares or applies the brakes to avoid collisions or decrease the severity of one. Forward Collision Alert, Side Blind Zone Alert with Lane Change Alert and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert all give audible and visible notifications to keep you out of potential trouble. The available head-up display also helps keep relevant information on a higher plane so your eyes stay on the road.

Considerate of both fuel-economy-minded drivers and the performance set, the Lacrosse can be fitted with either a 182 horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with electric eAssist or the more potent 304 horsepower, 3.6-liter V6 — both with direct injection. But power is nothing without delivery. The six-speed automatic shifts with buttery smoothness, and the optional Sport Mode on the front-wheel-drive V6 Premium model provides the kind of driving that begs for the long way home. Available HiPer struts and electrically controlled dampers deliver a more precise, properly planted feel on those long sweeping curves. For the wet, slippery and frosty challenges the road sometimes tosses your way, there’s Lacrosse’s optional all-wheel-drive. And with four distinct models available, you can configure your Lacrosse to suit your budget and your fancy.

In short, the 2014 Buick Lacrosse satisfies both the need for safety and the desire for beauty, comfort, and cutting-edge technology. It’s a statement about what you expect as a driver of a modern luxury automobile. The tradition of the three-shields has been carried into a new age, and the Lacrosse is the car that takes you there.
