Once we crest September, when the Earth’s tilt no longer favors shirtsleeves and flip flops (at least for us northern folk), our internal fashion clock begins to tick faster and faster, straight past ludicrous speed and into terminal plaid velocity. Much like the start of the football season or the leadup to pumpkin-spiced everything, there’s a crescendo of pressure as we wait to bust out our first autumn flannel.

But now we’ve had several months of icy chill to compound our initial flannel urge. It’s soft and cozy, warm, hard-wearing and masculine through and through. The Tartan plaids, the uniform solids; whatever your style, there’s a flannel out in the world, waiting to be buttoned up and layered. Wearing flannel doesn’t necessarily make you a lumberjack — though that’d be okay — but it does prepare you for the elements in a most style-appropriate manner. These are the best flannel shirts out there.
