Ashima Shiraishi Climbs Horizon V15
This 14-Year-Old Just Proved She’s One of the World’s Best Rock Climbers
At only 14 years old, Ashima Shiraishi has become the youngest person, and the only woman, to climb a boulder with a grade of V15 — the second-hardest grade ever climbed. The send took place yesterday on the island of Kyushu in southern Japan. The boulder problem, named Horizon, was first found in 2012 by a Japanese climber named Dai Koyamada. The problem is comprised of about 30 moves with tiny holds on an overhanging roof. Shiraishi had attempted the boulder twice before, but was forced to abandon the efforts both times due to wet rock. For comparison, Adam Ondra, one of the world’s best rock climbers, climbed his first V15 at age 15. Footage of the send will be debuted in the new Reel Rock 11 film by Big Up Productions.
At age 14, Ashima Shiraishi is already one of the best climbers alive. Read the story
