Bullets, Burnouts and a BMW 5-Series
Watch: BMW Films Returns with ‘The Escape’
Back in 2001, BMW had the fantastic idea of doing eight separate short films starring Clive Owen as a hired wheelman. Directors like Guy Richie, John Woo and Ang Lee took turns helming star-studded casts, which included Mickey Rourke, Don Cheadle and Madonna, among others. It didn’t matter that they were blatant marketing exercises; each stand-alone film outdid any action movie in theaters at the time.
And now, more than a decade later, BMW Films and Clive Owen are back. The first installment is exactly what we’ve been waiting for: The Escape, directed by District 9‘s Neill Blomkamp, sees Owen reprise his role as the mysterious wheelman-for-hire, tasked with helping a private security agency (led by Punisher-esque Jon Bernthal) sneak a human clone out of a secret lab being raided by the FBI. As expected, things go south pretty fast. Owen’s BMW 5-Series takes a few hits and keeps going — because, well, it’s a BMW in a BMW Film — and the action and driving easily live up to the first round of BMW films. It’s like they never stopped making them — and that leaves us even more excited for the next one.
