Disney Is Releasing Its First Ever 4K Blu-ray

4K Blu-rays are still something of a rarity. At the end of 2016, there were only 100 titles you could buy in this high-quality disc format. With the growing popularity of 4K TVs and 4K Blu-ray players, however, that’s changing. A few days ago, Disney announced it would be releasing its first 4K Blu-ray: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

In a Facebook post about the announcement, director James Gunn said: “4K UltraHD is almost certainly the best way you can see this movie at home — with more definition and the most vibrant colors possible on your home screen, and with the brightest brights and the blackest blacks. A being composed of light truly appears to be a being composed of light! This version is a roiling cinematic river of beauty and I’ve taken hundreds of hours personally making it look the best it can. This is one of the reasons why LIGHT and COLOR are such important elements of Vol. 2’s story, and why we screened the World Premiere in Los Angeles in essentially this format.”

The 4K Blu-ray release date for the Marvel film is August 22.

In the meantime, take a look at which 4K Blu-rays are already available.
