Bringing the D-Pad Back

This $60 Gadget Turns Your Phone into a Game Boy

Hyperkin’s Smartboy ($60) is an smartphone attachment that adds traditional Game Boy buttons and the ability to play original Game Boy and Game Boy Color games (via a companion app) on your smartphone. The original ideal for the Smartboy was conceived over two years ago as an April Fool’s gag, but it received such positive feedback that Hyperkin decided to give in the green light. Now the Smartboy is finally available for order.

The Smartboy attachment doesn’t work with iPhones, however. It’ll work with most of the latest Android smartphones, including the Samsung Galaxy S8. And while it doesn’t upscale the quality of the games, expect the games to look slightly better on your smartphone’s beautiful AMOLED display. Another plus is that the device is powered by your smartphone, via USB Type-C, and thus doesn’t require batteries.

If you’re the type of person who wants to play old Game Boy games on a new smartphone, with a physical D-Pad and buttons, the Smartboy is probably for you. That said, you can go on eBay or Amazon and buy a Game Boy Color for cheaper; it would take up the same amount of space in your backpack.
